Tomorrow, I’ll start my diet. I’ll start exercising. I’ll go back to school. I’ll get to that “honey-do” list on the fridge. I’ll clean out the garage.
I’ll “restore fiscal discipline.”
Who does Obama think he’s kidding? “Fiscal discipline?” Reflected in a budget that boasts a $1.25 trillion dollar deficit? (Link to news story)
Think for a moment. I did say trillion.
“Oh, but we are planning to make some hard choices.” Really?
Like between a Ferrari and a Porsche? Between a seaside home in Malibu , or in Naples? I feel for you, Mr. President. I’m so glad you are at the helm, “restoring discipline” after so many years of Republican overspending. I’m so glad you can set clear priorities and do what is necessary to get the country back on track.
“Oh, but my budget will cut the deficit in half in just four years.” Really? So in four years, we’ll only be overspending by 1/2 a trillion – and what will the national debt be by then? 15 or 20? And, we all know that more "crisis" situations will develop, and we all know that things will cost way more than you project. I guess it doesn’t make a difference, anymore, does it. The Treasury can just print the cash it needs to keep the good times rolling. I’m so glad you have the discipline to keep us under control. Why, without you and your “hard choices,” I wonder what we’d be spending? Without your principled leadership, we’d be in real trouble.
“To jumpstart our economy, we have to make a downpayment on health care reform.” What? So, the government will take over health care and put us on waiting lists – and that is somehow going to get the engine of capitalism firing on all cylinders again? Economic growth has to do with increasing production, not federal nannying of our bumps and bruises. Debate the merits of health care reform elsewhere, Mr. President – but don’t think all of us are so gullible. You’d be pushing health care whether or not the economy was tanking, and yes, I know, you’ll keep pushing it even if the vast majority of us don’t want it. Just tell the truth. You want the government to control private industries like health care, energy, transportation, and banking. Just like in Cuba or Venezuela, you want a select few aristocrats controlling the decisions of millions. Is that so hard to admit?
“Fiscal discipline.” Webster would be rolling over in his grave if he were witnessing your wholesale slaughter of the English language. I suppose we’re going to need some new lingo to communicate the concept that we used to think “discipline” meant.
And, of course, today – not even your version of discipline can begin. Times are too tough, the crisis is too big, the need is too great.
Tomorrow, we’ll get to all that. Today...
