Well, after far too many months of talking heads and polling data, we can all breathe a sign of relief and check back in on the political system three or four years from now.
Wrong!
Now led by radical leftists bent on reshaping American society via socialism and reinterpreting the Constitution to protect their liberal agenda, Americans will need to be more vigilant than ever in the fight to preserve their rights, their freedom, and their wealth.
A few expectations for the near future:
- The U.S. economy will be hit with massive tax increases on producers, businesses and investors. (Oh, right, I don't have to worry...Obama promised he'd only tax those other people - I won't feel the effects at all! Woohoo!)
- The Fairness Doctrine, a clever liberal plan to shut down conservative talk radio and silence voices of opposition and accountability, will be pursued by the new Congress and joyfully signed into law by Barack Obama. (Prepare to learn just how "flexible" liberals can make the First Amendment.)
- The U.S. military will be drastically reduced - not just in the Iraq operation - but across the board. Obama will shift budget money from defense spending to social spending, weakening our power just as our enemies are ramping up their own. (Oh, right, we won't need a strong military anymore. Obama will offer "strong words" and "strong resolve" to confront international problems.)
- Lots of young, enthusastic and largely uninformed Obama voters will be disappointed, once they realize that despite their man being in power, they'll still have to go to work for a decent living, they still aren't as rich as other people, their health care still leaves much to be desired, personal discipline is still requried for health and success, and they'll still get hangovers. (But who cares, right? At least those greedy rich people will have to pay their fair share!)
- Amnesty will be granted to most illegal aliens, and little or nothing will be done to stop the flow of new illegals coming into the country. (Read: more Democrat voters for next time around!)
- Health care will be tinkered with, but the changes made won't live up to the expectations of voters. Most likely, health care prices will increase about as much as federal assistance to pay for it will increase. So, we'll pay higher taxes and get about the same thing we're getting now. I'm no expert in this area, and I hope I'm wrong. We'll see.
- Many middle-class voters will go through a period of "buyer's remorse" when they see what they've actually elected - particularly in the House and Senate.
- Some Americans may start confusing Washington D.C. with Gotham City. The scale of corruption will make Chicago politics look like church on Sunday.
- The Democrats and Obama will not do anything meaningful to help America gain energy independence from the Middle East, and they'll put nearly impassible roadblocks in the way of any new energy supplies being developed in our country. The price of electricity will go up due to government policy, no doubt creating the need for another goverment program, to help people pay for their electricity. They'll levy higher taxes on oil companies than on other industries, which will reduce the supply of oil and raise the price for consumers. A wonderful world, isn't it? They will, however, pump untold billions of dollars into "new technology." I sincerely hope it works.
- Obama will lift any and all restrictions on abortion, freeing women to kill their babies wherever and whenever they like. Look for "freedom of choice protections" very soon.
- The Democrat Congress will pass a law in the name of "workplace protection" to publicize the personal votes of workers, those for and against unionization. This will lead to a rapid expansion of unions in businesses of all sizes, due to threats and intimidation. A sure recipe for higher consumer prices and less workplace competition? You bet! But look at the bright side: you won't have to support your local Democrat for Congress by writing a separate check anymore - your union dues will be conveniently deducted from your paycheck and used to fund their campaigns.
- Wealth-spreading won't make people happy, so down the road we'll hear that all we need to do is "spread the wealth around - a little more." That should be fun.
Can America have a bright future?
I am confident we can. But only if discerning Americans remember that "Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom."
My friends, we have much work to do. Stay tuned.
