The President-Elect will have a new supporter in January; not because of anything he has said or clarified, but because of his new position as my nation's president.
And while I disagree with the President-to-be on the substance of what good governance is, I respect him and his office, and hope that he finds great success. After all, as a key leader of my nation, his success is my own. My prayers will be with him for wisdom and courage to do what is right, regardless of the circumstances.
I've been vocal on this blog (and in my personal life) about the key reasons I thought Obama was a bad choice for voters, but the day he is sworn into office, I plan to give honor where it is due.
I'll still stand firmly against the socialism that he and his fellow Democrats plan to force upon Americans. Socialized medicine, a Robin-Hood tax plan, and an endless expansion of entitlement programs aren't the right direction for a free and responsible people.
I'll still speak out if the President compromises basic American values; if he puts world popularity ahead of American interests, if his policies violate the Constitution, if he reduces our military strength, and if he rolls back protections on innocent human life.
But disagreement doesn't equal hatred, at least for me.
I know that the other side took their distaste for George W. Bush to an extreme - toward hatred and conspiracy. Many liberals actually hoped Bush's policies would fail - even if it meant American failure. At times it seemed as though they wanted our armed forces to lose in Iraq, or to see our economy stumble, just so they could say "I told you so!"
I refuse to approach things that way.
I love America, and I want security and prosperity, regardless of who gets the credit for it. After all, I have young kids who have the privilege of growing up in this great country - I certainly don't want to spoil their future just to score some political points for my side.
I wish President-elect Obama the very best, and plan to do whatever is in my power to help him and our other national leaders succeed.
Let's keep our new president accountable (remember that 'we the people' are still the boss), stand up for the rule of law, be vigilant in the defense of our freedoms, and seek the success of every American; blue, red or otherwise.
