Sinking, dropping, ravaging, crashing, losing, and
plunging. Those words have taken on new
meaning lately. And with good reason, I
suppose.
But in the midst of the turbulence, turmoil, instability and
volatility, there is a breath of fresh air playing at a movie theater near
you. If the economy has you down,
uncrumple those final dollar bills from your taxed-and-thinned wallet and go
see Fireproof.
I don’t know that the movie will win any awards, but for myself, it was the most refreshing film I’ve seen in years. It challenged me to think about the things that matter in life – far from politics of change or bailouts or other nonsense competing for my attention.
Fireproof sports tears and laughter, action and romance. A little something for everyone, I guess. And even better, it lifts up and cheers for some forgotten American values – fatherhood, marriage, faith, friendship and heroism. Of course, you and I know those values aren’t forgotten – just ignored by the media makers who think they can define our lives.
Kind of like that feeling you get listening to Sarah Palin
speak. Maybe not perfect, but real. And that has more appeal than any
slick-tongued political superstar, or record-smashing Hollywood
Another thing that impressed me about Fireproof was that I was challenged to be a better person by the movie – to treat my family differently, to value my friends and faith – it actually meant something. I didn’t walk out wishing a spider bite would grant me superpowers or a fluke alien visitation would soon have me saving the universe – I walked out ready to hold my wife’s hand, show a little more love to my kids, and thank God for the wonderful blessings I have.
Fireproof is a worthy investment.
